One of the longstanding expat bars in Tainan, Willy’s Bar & Grill brings in customers for both eating and drinking. This establishment was started by former LA Dodger pitcher Steve Wilson, but he has since moved on to other venues and it’s under new management (two foreigners named Andy and Alun). Steve left behind a good sports bar with a reputation for authentic American-style bar and grill food, and the clientele just keep on coming.
Willy’s has a where everybody knows your name feel to it. There’s a long, spacious bar where people can spread out, eat their food and chat with their neighbors without the music volume being a problem. People meet and greet and expect to be able to chat openly with those around them. There’s also large booth seating if you come with a crowd. It’s a sports bar, and various games are on the TVs, but the screens around the bar are not large and there’s no sports memorabilia on the wall, so you don’t have to think of it as a sports bar. They do have a large screen TV, a pool table, foosball, a dart board, and wireless internet.
Willy’s really hits home with its food. It has decent burgers, very good Tex-Mex and probably the best pizza in town. It also offers pasta dishes, salads, vegetarian food, Taiwanese standards and food from the grill. It stocks a full bar and offers Boddington’s, Kronenbourg, Stella Artois, Heinenken, and Carlsburg on tap.
Happy hour is daily from 6pm to 8pm, during which full pints of Stella go for NT$120 and Carlsburg go for NT$99. Thursday nights are pub trivia nights. Fridays have specials on shooters.
Willy’s is a little away from central downtown, but it’s convenient to Anping, the southern part of the city, and the Tayih Landis Hotel.
